Searching for the Gardner Transition in Glassy Glycerol

We search for a Gardner transition in glassy glycerol, standard molecular glass, measuring the third harmonics cubic susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{3}^{(3)}$ from slightly below usual glass temperature down to 10 K. According mean-field picture, if local motion within were becoming highly correlated due emergence of phase then ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{3}^{(3)}$, which is analogous dynamical spin-glass susceptibility, should increase and diverge at ${T}_{G}$. find instead that upon cooling $|{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{3}^{(3)}|$ decreases by several orders magnitude becomes roughly constant regime $100\ensuremath{-}10\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{K}$. rationalize our findings assuming low physics described localized excitations weakly interacting via dipolar pairwise interaction random magnetic field. Our quantitative estimations show twenty fifty times smaller than field contribution, thus rationalizing absence phase. This hints fact may be suppressed glasses, but it also suggests ways favor its existence other amorphous solids changing preparation protocol.
